Today, I would like to comment on the question somebody asked. They wanted to know if God existed and how can that existence be proved. They wanted to know if it could be proved through science. The following is an attempt to answer at least some of the above. First let look at the relationship between science and God…
Concerning Science and the bible, the two are not at odds as most people think. Science and discovery is simply mans attempt to (un)cover or (dis)cover the workings of the universe. The fact that it’s a discovery is an admission that what was discovered by scientists was always there but covered. They did not create. They just uncovered what someone else had created. Science just made a discovery. In other words God has created everything but he did not tell how everything works. This is what we call a mystery. A mystery is something covered. Science is mans attempt to uncover the mysteries of God about the workings of the universe. This is how the scriptures put it in the book of Proverbs 25:2…
New Living Translation (©2007)
It is God’s privilege to conceal things and the king’s privilege to discover them.
King James Bible (Cambridge Ed.)
It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.
Pro 25:2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing, but the glory of kings is to search out a thing. [Deut. 29:29; Rom. 11:33.]
So God does not mind men seeking out how His universe works. Infact, most of what we learn in science is confirmed first by scripture. The rest of science is theories which are called so because they are not facts. They cannot be proven hence we cannot consider them to be truth. Truth is only what he scripture gives us. A simple example is the bible always stated that the earth was round or a circular space but for years men and scientists thought it was flat until the bible was proven true. There are many other such stories but this is not the question under inspection. All I wanted to show you is that science does not and cannot prove God or his Word. Rather it’s the opposite. It the Word that is proof or disproof of what science (dis)covers. The superior is the Word. Why? Because all things were made through Him and without him nothing was made that has been made (John 1:3). As Isa 29:16 tells us, “Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, “He did not make me”? Can the pot say of the potter, “He knows nothing”? Does a jar ever say, “The potter who made me is stupid”?”. Obviously not! God is not proved by us. It’s the other way round. Nevertheless, in His mercy he has given us nuggets that could help us understand who he is and to understand his attributes.
There a couple of ways to come to understand God. First is through creation. That is what our forefathers who did not have the scriptures did. Paul says…
Rom 1:19-21 For that which is known about God is evident to them and made plain in their inner consciousness, because God [Himself] has shown it to them. (20) For ever since the creation of the world His invisible nature and attributes, that is, His eternal power and divinity, have been made intelligible and clearly discernible in and through the things that have been made (His handiworks). So [men] are without excuse [altogether without any defense or justification], [Ps. 19: 1-4.] (21) Because when they knew and recognized Him as God, they did not honor and glorify Him as God or give Him thanks. But instead they became futile and godless in their thinking [with vain imaginings, foolish reasoning, and stupid speculations] and their senseless minds were darkened.
That means that those who were had the scriptures and never had a preacher preach to them have no excuse. God revealed his nature and what may be know about himself to them through what he has made i.e. his creation. So all who have sinned without the Law will also perish without [regard to] the Law, and all who have sinned under the Law will be judged and condemned by the Law (Rom 2:12). We do not fall into the category of the group who do not have the Word available to us. We are those who were born in a day when the Word is available and we can all read and go to church and listen to the Word of God. We are born at a time when God has given us the Holy Spirit to teach us all things so for us, we get our knowledge of God from His Word. But let me give a word of caution:
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him (Heb 11:6).
Rom 1:17 For in the Gospel a righteousness which God ascribes is revealed, both springing from faithandleading to faith [disclosed through the way of faith that arouses to more faith]. As it is written, The man who through faith is just and upright shall live and shall live by faith. [Hab. 2:4.]
You cannot understand God or anything about Him without faith. SO if you elevate science which is inferior to faith in God and His Word, you cannot understand God or His ways. The recipe is “faith in God first”. If you hold a pen in you hand which to your eyes look red BUT the bible says its green. Then Wisdom is to go with the Word instead of your sensory perception. This is the secret to true success that has no sorrow added to it. Hab 2:4 and Heb 10:30 confirm that we live in God’s Kingdom by faith and not by sensory perception.
SO who created God? Where did he come from? Does he exist?
Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, like the Son of God he remains a priest forever. Heb 7:3
This practically answers where he came from and who created Him. Jesus said I and the father are one so if you want to understand God, look at Jesus. He is the Word and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through himall things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. John 1:1-3a
That simply means God or His Word ie Jesus have no genealogy, no beginning of days or end. He is the source but he himself has no source (John 1:1 and Rev 1:8). Before there was ever a beginning, God existed. He IS. That’s why he could tell the Israelites “I am that I am”. He created time for humanity. He himself dwells outside of time and space. Before time came into existence, He existed and after time passes away (i.e. eternity) he will still be there. This means there is nothing outside of Him.
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty” (Rev 1:8).
To say He is the alpha is the same as He telling us that He IS the beginning. The answer to where did he come from is a bit silly because He has never been limited to time and space. He transcends all of that. Put differently, He is the beginning of existence and He is existence. As he Himself said…”You are my witnesses,” declares the LORD, “and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know andbelieve me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me (Isa 43:10).
All that is required is faith and belief that His word is true.
For any person who still seeks insight into this question of the existence of God, if you are truly sincere in your quest for an answer, the solution is to seek God personally and diligently. God is Wisdom. If we seek Him earnestly, we will find Him. The key word is diligence. Bless you all.
Pro 8:17 I love those who love me, and those who seek me early and diligently shall find me. [I Sam. 2:30; Ps. 91:14; John 14:21; James 1:5.]
There’s a fundamental problem with your logic here. You are using Scripture to prove science and to prove the existence of God. I thought the whole question was about using some other kind of evidence. With the Word as the only authority mentioned, you are never using anything outside the system to authenticate what is in the system. In any discussion with someone who doesn’t recognize the authority of the Bible, you are not going to get anywhere. I’m just pointing this out to challenge you to go a step deeper.
Thank you very much for your comments. They are very much appreciated and as a social science researcher, I see and understand your point totally. The difficulty lies in the fact that this blog is about Christianity and Christianity is a ‘faith’ phenomenon as stated in the text which cannot be proven outside of its own constitution. Attempts can be made and hence what some call christian apologetics. The “just shall live by faith” and sola scriptura were the simple phrases that Luther and other reformers used as a basis to shake their world. They did not need an external source. This approach is foolishness to the some (1 Corinthians 1:18, 2 Corinthians 4:3) and i understand that but I know through scripture and my experience that Faith, hope and Love carries with it immeasurable power which superceed sensory perception and human philosophical reasonings. I do not want to use my experience or some ones experience to validate scripture. If God is truly who He says He is and if the scriptures be true, then He will unveil the truth to the true seeker Himself. Faith is the foundation upon which Christianity is established.
That notwithstanding, i sincerely thank you very much for your comment.
